CASTING CALLS

Pint-sized performers are wanted for two of ShowBiz Kidz/ShowBiz Starz upcoming productions.

"Mulan Jr." is a musical re-telling of the 1998 animated Disney film with songs ranging from "Reflection" and "A Girl is Worth Fighting For" to "I'll Make a Man Out of You" and "Honor to Us All."

Performers ages 4 to 12 are needed, and everyone enrolled is guaranteed a part. The deadline to apply is Aug. 16.

Tuition is $120, payable in two installments, and includes a keepsake script, rehearsal CD and a final cast party.

All cast members must attend an audition workshop from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 25 to prepare for preliminary auditions from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 27 and final auditions from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 27.

All auditions are at the Royal Majestic Theatre inside Trillium Academy, 15740 Racho Road, Taylor.

Rehearsals are from noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays, starting Aug. 30. Show dates are Nov. 7, 8, 9, 14 and 15.

Performers ages 13 to 18 are needed for "Get Smart," a fast-paced comedy based on the popular TV series, running Oct. 17, 18, 24 and 25 at the Royal Majestic Theatre.

The play follows bumbling Maxwell Smart, Agent 86 of CONTROL, as he works on a bizarre new case to stop the sinister organization known as KAOS from their most shameful plot.

Auditions will run from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 21 and 22 at the theater. There are parts for 10 males and 17 females.

Be prepared to do a cold reading from the script. A complete character listing and rehearsal schedule will be available at auditions.

If cast, performers must pay $100 tuition, payable in two installments, which includes a keepsake script and final cast party.

Rehearsals are from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturdays, starting Aug. 23.

For more information, call ShowBiz Kidz/ShowBiz Starz artistic director Carol-Ann Black at 1-734-771-2515.

Auditions are set for noon Aug. 17 and Aug. 24 at the Woodhaven Community Center, 23101 Hall Road, for the "Woodhaven Idol Challenge." Finals will take place at the Woodhaven Harvest Moon Festival on Sept. 13.

For audition details, call 1-313-686-9446.

The Southgate Community Players will hold auditions for its fall production of "Funny Girl" at 7 p.m. Aug. 17 and 18 at the Corner Playhouse, 12671 Dix-Toledo Road, Southgate.

The show tells the story of celebrated Ziegfeld entertainer and Hollywood star Fanny Brice.

Registration will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Participants should be prepared to sing and learn a short dance routine.

Characters include Fanny Brice, a former ugly duckling in her mid-20s to mid-40s, who stars in the Ziegfeld Follies on Broadway; Nick Arnstein, a 25- to 45-year-old good-looking but unsuccessful gambler; Fanny's sharp-tongued but sympathetic mother, Mrs. Brice, a woman in her mid-40s to mid-60s; and theater choreographer Eddie, a tap dancer in his mid-20s to mid-40s.

Other roles include three of Mrs. Brice's neighbors in their mid-40s to mid-60s; Mr. Renaldi, an agent in his mid-30s to early 60s; a Ziegfeld tenor of any age; Florenz Ziegfeld, a man in his mid-30s to mid-50s; and a chorus from which smaller parts will be chosen.

Callbacks will be Aug. 19 if necessary. Show dates are Nov. 14, 15, 21 and 22.

For more information, send an e-mail to info@scponstage.com.

The Seaway Chorale and Orchestra will hold auditions for teens and adults in anticipation of its winter concert, "Jingle All the Way."

Tryouts for soprano, alto, tenor and bass parts are set for 7 p.m. Aug. 26, 6:30 p.m. Sept. 2 and 6:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at Faith United Methodist church, 2530 Charlton, Trenton.

Chorale director Mike Begian and two current chorale members will judge the auditions.

Singers can choose their own solo piece or sing music suggested by the chorale. Auditions last five minutes and the ability to read music isn't necessary.

Rehearsals are held from 7 to 9:15 p.m. every Tuesday until the show, which is set for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 12 and 13.

To schedule an audition appointment, call Sharon York at 1-734-783-5202 or Don Van Every at 1-734-676-9504. Send an e-mail to seawaychorale@yahoo.com for more information.

The Downriver Youth Performing Arts Center's next workshop session is set for September.

Classes are held Saturday mornings for ages 5 to 8 and afternoons for ages 9 to 14. Sessions are six weeks, with a final performance.

Westborn Market, 14925 Middlebelt Road, Livonia, will host a casting call for "The Homestyle Chef Show" from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow.

Those interested in trying out should bring a headshot and a description of the type of meal they plan to cook.

The show will consist of 13 episodes, focusing on children's meals made by children, main meals and desserts made by those ages 18 and older, and bonus meals by top chefs from around the metropolitan Detroit area.
